Have you been involved in a domestic violence dispute?  Are you struggling to find ways to communicate without feelings of hostility?  Are you unsure of how to break the cycle of abuse? Are you struggling to put your life back together following a volatile relationship? You are not alone.  The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their life. 85% of victims are women. Men are also victims of domestic violence. 1.3 million victims will experience a physical assault by an intimate partner every year.

At Greenwood Counseling Center, we take an approach to domestic violence counseling that is non-judgmental. We help victims to understand the cycle of violence and to improve self-esteem and healthy boundaries. We provide counseling to heal the underlying traumatic wounds that result from chaotic, unhealthy relationships, understand what they are experiencing and to empower them to make changes to live a healthy life. We also include EMDR treatment to help victims with the traumas they may have experienced. Gaining awareness of victim and offender dynamics help victims find healing and help them see they can make better life choices. Knowing where they are in the cycle of violence such as offender justification, getting stuck in pretend normal, and times of rising stress are areas we focus on in domestic violence counseling.

At Greenwood Counseling Center, we place tremendous value on approaching all of our counseling services non-judgmentally. We offer respect and dignity to each and every client. We want our clients to have happy, healthy lives and we believe that starts with having a safe and trusting environment in which to explore feelings and foster growth in one’s understanding of themselves and their relationships.

If you don’t work on making changes, then nothing changes. The fact that you are exploring these options is an indication that you realize change is essential for your wellbeing. Treatment is where hope exists. The therapists at Greenwood Counseling Center want you to succeed and will provide you the means to do so.

As a victim, awareness is key when providing domestic violence counseling. Being on the receiving end of domestic violence can be a place where you get stuck and not sure how to find your way out. You may have endured years of either a physical or emotional beat down. Your self-esteem has been diminished. Talking about your experiences and getting support from your therapist will help you understand and normalize your feelings. Treatment will give you tools to help you get unstuck. Understanding that your actions are normal and what others in your circumstance have been through will help you see yourself as having good survival skills. We also acknowledge your strengths and help you see them within yourself. EMDR is a treatment that can also be a resource we will provide to you to help you heal from traumas experienced.

Offenders have the opportunity to become accountable for their actions, have empathy for their victim, and know what changes are essential for their future. At Greenwood Counseling Center we offer respect and dignity to all of our clients. Our hope is that our clients will gain awareness of healthy relationships and find stability and happiness in their current or in future relationships.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy used to help clients resolve traumatic memories in a way that is often more effective than traditional talk therapy. For more information on this therapy, please visit our page, About EMDR.
