Help Your Child and Family Thrive

All children are different. Just as children have different strengths, they also differ in their personalities, abilities, and learning styles. It can be challenging as a parent to realize that certain parenting techniques that may have worked well with one child are not working so well with another.

Our therapy provides the tools and insights needed to bridge these gaps.

Our Focus Areas for Child and Family Therapy

Children process emotions and experiences in ways that differ significantly from adults, requiring a therapeutic approach that aligns with their developmental stage. To ensure engagement and meaningful progress, we incorporate play-based and creative interventions that are both effective and enjoyable.

Our tailored methods are designed to address a wide range of challenges your child may be navigating, including:

  • Difficulty maintaining focus
  • Impulsivity
  • Expressing their thoughts, needs, or wants in words
  • Managing their emotional response to frustration
  • Interpreting social cues
  • Solving problems or considering a wide range of solutions to any given problem
  • Chronic irritability or anxiety
  • Attention seeking behavior
  • Empathizing with others
  • Connecting with peers, starting conversations, or entering into groups
  • Inflexible, inaccurate interpretations of events, such as, “It’s not fair,” or “Everyone is out to get me.”

Greenwood Counseling Center works with children ages five and up.

While the therapist will primarily meet with the child one-on-one, they will also hold regular sessions with the parents and child together. This ensures that parents are familiar with the skills their child is learning and can effectively support their progress at home.

For young children, the counseling process begins with a session for parents. During this initial meeting, the therapist will discuss the parents’ concerns and address any questions. Moving forward, the therapist may occasionally meet with the parents separately to explore how their parenting style and techniques can be tailored to best support their child’s unique needs.

Child counseling is often needed when a child lacks a particular skill to successfully navigate the tasks and challenges of daily life. In other cases, family counseling or parenting coaching may be the most helpful in helping you to reclaim harmony in your family.
