Heal from grief.
Grief Counseling
Are you having difficulty recovering following the loss of a loved one? Do you feel overwhelmed by sadness and feelings of grief? Are you feeling regret or guilt about things left unsaid? Do you feel that nothing can ever change the sadness you feel? You are not alone. Grief is one of the hardest experiences to go through in life, and it is an experience most of us will encounter at some point. Having support to help you through this tough time can be tremendously helpful in the healing process.
How can I feel better through Grief Counseling?
Grief takes time to heal and often involves many different feelings in addition to sadness. Good grief counseling allows you the time and space to process through your emotions at your own pace. It is important to take time to nurture your wounds following loss, but it is equally important to do it in a way that will eventually create feelings of new hope and happiness for the future. Reaching out for help is the first step. Grief counseling can help you to get on the road to feeling more hopeful and peaceful following loss.
At Greenwood Counseling Center, we specialize in grief counseling for adults, teens and children and with grief counseling and loss techniques.
What we have learned in our work with grief is that although grief is the most painful emotion to experience, it can be transformative.
Grief and Loss Coping Skills
It is very difficult to reorganize your thoughts and feelings about the world around you when you are in the midst of grieving. The experience of grief can also vary widely depending on the age of the person grieving and the nature of the relationship. In addition to our work with adults, we provide grief counseling and grief therapy to children and teens who have suffered the loss of a family member or parent. We work with them at their own pace providing warmth, encouragement and support as they find their way following such significant change.
Through effective grief counseling therapy, adults, teens and children alike can work through these confusing and, at times, overwhelming emotions to adapt to the change in their environment and day to day life. There are also specific therapies that we may incorporate, such as EMDR Therapy, a therapy very often used in grief counseling, to help our clients find relief.
I’m just not sure about interventions for grief counseling…will never be able to understand my pain.
While it is true that no one can understand exactly how you feel, talking with someone and sharing with them the unique aspects of your experience can help. We have heard hundreds of stories of loss and no two experiences are the same. We recognize and respect the uniqueness of each loss and strive to honor that in the grief counseling we provide.
I don’t know that talking about this will help.
Talking about your feelings can help you to feel supported and understood. We provide resources and tools that can also aid in the healing process, in addition to often using EMDR therapy to help clients process through the difficult emotions of dealing with grief and loss.
But what is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy used to help clients resolve traumatic memories in a way that is often more effective than traditional talk therapy. For more information on this therapy, please visit our page, About EMDR.
I am worried that if I feel better I will forget about my loved one, or the memory of them will become more distant.
Grief counseling therapy and EMDR therapy will not erase memories of your loved one. What it will do is help you to embrace the positive memories, resolve feelings of guild or regret, and incorporate the experience of the relationship with them into a cherished part of your life story.
What is unique about working with you for grief counseling?
The therapists at Greenwood Counseling Center approach grief counseling with warmth and support. We work to build trust quickly and enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds and learning about each person’s journey. We appreciate each person’s unique experiences and recognize that healing looks different for everyone. Discussions of spirituality are welcome even though spiritual beliefs vary widely amongst our clients. Spirituality is often a big part of healing from loss and can provide tremendous catharsis.
We always feel honored to be a part of the journey and are inspired by the strength and resiliency of the human spirit. We, too, have suffered from loss and know how difficult it can be to feel better; but, we also know that with pain comes growth and transformation that can be positive and rich in the fabric of life.
